Client: Robert Morris University
Location: Moon Township
Architect: RBA International, Inc.
Robert Morris University is widely known for their sports programs, and with a quickly-growing club sport demographic, a facility was needed to give all students the chance to explore their athleticism.
This 45,000 square foot multi-purpose building atop a hill in Moon Township was made via pre-engineered structural steel. This allowed for adjustments to best fit the needs of the students, RMU’s top priority. Large windows shed natural light on the various exercise rooms and provide for Colonial signage in the basketball court area.
Built on the site of the former Sewell Events Center, the Student Recreation and Fitness Center is home to the UPMC Events Center, a state-of-the-art space that is home to RMU’s basketball and volleyball teams. It also hosts weight and fitness rooms, group exercise rooms, and offices of sports officials for the University.
As club sports expand at RMU, several of the 23 current clubs have received national recognition, and participation has only continued to increase. Students are encouraged to join existing intramural teams, or create their own, reminding students of one of RMU’s core values – that the individual matters, and that engagement breeds mutual respect and empathy.
The workmanship is excellent.
