Client: Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Architect: Fukui Architects, PC
Botany Hall itself was constructed in 1901 as an education facility. This update is located on the first floor, and supports Phipps’ mission to promote the well-being of humans and the environment. Classes and camps are offered year-round in this innovative space, teaching participants how to prepare food with nutrition and sustainability in mind.
This state-of-the-art space can accommodate up to 18 students per class, and the instructor’s cooking station is outfitting with cameras and monitors for close-up multi-angle views. This dynamic overhaul incorporates sophisticated, touchscreen-controlled LED lighting, an energy-efficient HVAC system, Energy Star appliances, and nontoxic building materials to meet the high standards set within Phipps’ LEED® and Living Building Challenge certified structures.
